The board of trustees and the entire membership of the Ghana Association of Phonographic Industry (GAPI), which is the umbrella organization of most music producers in the country, have congratulated the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Mrs. Betty Mould Iddrisu for the able manner in which she addressed the stakeholders of the creative industry at the Alisa Hotel on Tuesday, April 21.In a statement issued and signed by its president, John Mensah Sarpong, GAPI said it was confident that Mrs. Betty Mould Iddrisu has what it takes to turn the fortunes of the music industry round and advance the growth of the creative industry. It said being once an administrator of copyright, the Minister has in-depth knowledge about copyright and related issues. According to the statement, GAPI was happy the Minister noted that when laws are passed there is always a section of the public who would not be in favour of it, and even oppose it. However, if the specific law could benefit the majority, then the interest of the minority should give way to majority views and opinions. It said at the meeting with the stakeholders, the Minister attributed the cause of the problems facing the creative industry, music in particular, to self interest and personality clash. This in her view would have a negative impact on the industry if allowed to range on. It said that having followed the problems in the music industry in particular for the past 10 years, she had noted that the same people are talking on the same issues without thinking on a way to resolve those issues, and asked them: “Can’t you for once give peace a chance?” GAPI was happy that the Minister advised all the stakeholders to channel their concerns on the Legislative Instrument (LI), if any, to the Attorney General’s office latest by May 7. After the deadline, she would personally see to it that the LI is passed. In conclusion, GAPI affirms “our support for the security device which in our opinion would promote relationship between the artistes and producers and help erase mistrust and quarrels that had often arisen between musicians and their executive producers”. Finally, the statement said it was GAPI’s belief that stakeholders must give the Minister their unflinching support and assist her to lead the crusade in the interest of all the stakeholders. Related
