Show business or the entertainment industry is one sector that generates so much revenue for the economy of any nation and for the showbiz personalities/ celebrities or entertainers. Elsewhere, celebrities are tagged as very rich, they reside in the glitzy mansions, the drive in the most expensive and luscious cars and they fly the best private jets – and of course, they are highly respected and influential in society.

Unfortunately, the Ghanaian celebrity or entertainer is the least rich, the least respected, drives the rickety cars, reside in the mundane house and have no say in what so ever. They are so divided and virtually can not make decisions for themselves, how much more influence the Government to do something for them, but it’s a different topic for a different platform.

The Nigerian influence on Ghana Music PDF Print E-mail

Yes, Nigerian music is flourishing and the Nigerian artistes are responsible for such a feat. It is implicitly normal for anybody to copy anything that is positive, especially when the copying is done well – but is disheartening and sickening to realize that the new generation of Ghanaian musicians are feverishly singing or trying to sing like their overly successful Nigerian counterparts.

You can bet your last pesewa to turn on your radio and hear a Ghanaian song that sounds so much like Nigerian-made and if you don’t wait for the presenter or DJ to mention the name of the artiste, you would definitely make a mistake by thinking the song was done by a Nigerian artiste.

Years ago when I was growing up enthused with entertainment I never missed the chance to see musicians like Nana Ampadu, Akwasi Ampofo Agyei,  J.A. Adofo, Snr. Eddie Donkor, Amakye Dede, Prince Osei Kofi, Ali Baba,  and many others as they played live concerts.

I was curious enough to know that, after these musicians play in my now-developed village, they went with their bandsmen and buses to the next village to play – and now I realize that the musicians were actually touring, playing live concerts from city to city, town to town and region to region.

The Chief Executive of OM studios, Abraham Ohene-Djan, on Tuesday called on television stations to pay Ghanaian musicians for airing their videos.

He told GNA in an interview that Ghana was the only country where musicians paid money before their videos were aired. Mr. Ohene-Djan said television stations attracted more viewers when they aired music videos, adding that, television stations also made more money when advertisers placed their adverts on musical programmes. He explained that television stations spent money to produce programmes but did not want to spend money when they aired music videos, saying a percentage of the money the stations made from advertisements must be paid to the musicians.
